Perched atop a hill in the Eastern Ghats, the Kondapalli Fort is a striking relic of Andhra Pradesh’s medieval past. Just a short drive from Vijayawada, this 14th-century architectural masterpiece was originally built by Prolaya Vema Reddy of the Reddy dynasty and later served as a military fort for several kingdoms including the Qutb Shahis and the British.
The three-tiered structure welcomes visitors through a massive gateway known as the Dargha Darwaza, crafted from a single block of granite. Within its fortifications lie royal halls, watch towers, and storerooms, each echoing stories of war, strategy, and royal life.
One of the most fascinating features is the natural reservoir situated inside the fort, with water that remains cool year-round, a marvel of ancient engineering.
The surrounding region is equally famous for its Kondapalli toys — colorful wooden carvings made from a locally sourced softwood called poniki. These handcrafted toys are not only beautiful keepsakes but also carry forward a centuries-old tradition of art and storytelling.
