Visit the Abandoned City of Fatehpur Sikri – A Forgotten Mughal Marvel

Imagine a city once brimming with imperial splendor, bustling markets, royal courts, and stunning architecture — only to be abandoned within a few decades. Welcome to Fatehpur Sikri, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just outside Agra, Uttar Pradesh.

Commissioned by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1571, Fatehpur Sikri was built to honor Sufi saint Salim Chishti, whose blessings Akbar credited for the birth of his heir. The city was meticulously planned and constructed in red sandstone, showcasing a unique blend of Islamic, Hindu, and Jain architectural influences.

But despite its grandeur, Fatehpur Sikri’s fate was sealed by a chronic shortage of water. Within just a few years, the Mughal court was forced to shift back to Agra, leaving this architectural gem to fade into silence — and eventually become known as India’s most beautiful ghost town.

Wander through:

  • Buland Darwaza – The 54-metre-high gateway that stands as a symbol of Mughal power.

  • Jama Masjid – A majestic mosque with intricate Mughal detailing.

  • Tomb of Salim Chishti – A white marble mausoleum still visited by pilgrims today.

  • Panch Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and Birbal’s Palace – All reflecting Akbar’s secular vision and love for architectural innovation.

The sunset over the red sandstone structures casts a golden hue that’s simply unforgettable, making this destination a must-visit for history lovers, photographers, and architecture enthusiasts.
