Located along the scenic coastline of Kerala, Anjengo Fort (also known as Anchuthengu Fort) holds a significant place in India’s colonial history. It was among the first British trading posts and fortifications on the Malabar Coast, constructed with permission from the Queen of Attingal in the late 17th century.
What began as a quiet trade settlement quickly turned into a focal point of power struggles. In 1721, the fort became the epicenter of a major rebellion against the British, following the Attingal Outbreak—a pivotal moment in the resistance against colonial influence. The fort also came under frequent attack by rival colonial powers vying for a share in Kerala's lucrative spice trade.
Today, the serene setting of Anjengo Fort paints a stark contrast to its tumultuous past. Nestled beside the Arabian Sea, surrounded by coconut groves, and kissed by the ocean breeze, the fort is a peaceful retreat where history whispers through the ancient walls.
