Explore the Rich Legacy of the Ahoms at Sibsagar
Located in the heart of Assam, Sibsagar (also spelled Sivasagar) offers a fascinating glimpse into the powerful Ahom dynasty, which ruled the region for over six centuries. The town's name, meaning “Ocean of Lord Shiva”, is derived from the 129-acre Sibsagar Tank, built in the 18th century.
Overlooking the tank are the iconic Shiva-dol, Vishnu-dol, and Devi-dol — three majestic temples that form the spiritual and cultural heart of Sibsagar. Among them, Shiva-dol, standing at 104 feet, holds the distinction of being India’s tallest Shiva temple.
Beyond its spiritual sites, Sibsagar also boasts remarkable monuments such as the Talatal Ghar (a seven-storeyed palace with secret tunnels) and the Rangpur Palace, showcasing the brilliant architectural prowess of the Ahom rulers.
A journey through Sibsagar is not just a walk through history—it’s a deep dive into the sophisticated governance, religious harmony, and artistic achievements of one of India’s longest-reigning dynasties.
