Explore Asia’s Oldest Amphitheatre – Rang Ghar, A Masterpiece of Ahom Architecture

Tucked away in the heritage-rich town of Sivasagar, Rang Ghar is one of Assam’s most iconic monuments and a rare gem in Indian architecture. Believed to be the oldest surviving amphitheatre in Asia, Rang Ghar was built in the 18th century during the reign of Swargadeo Pramatta Singha of the Ahom dynasty.

This two-storey oval pavilion was used by Ahom royalty as a viewing gallery for traditional sports like buffalo fights, wrestling, and other cultural events during the Bihu festival. The building’s arched entrances, sturdy yet elegant columns, and elevated platforms reflect a style far ahead of its time.

A striking feature of Rang Ghar is its roof, which is shaped like an Ahom boat and topped with sculpted stone crocodiles—a symbolic and aesthetic touch. Even more fascinating is the construction technique: bricks bonded with a paste made of rice and eggs, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Assamese artisans.

Declared an architectural heritage site, Rang Ghar is not just a symbol of the Ahoms’ royal legacy but also a proud representation of India's lesser-known historical brilliance.
