Nestled amidst the misty peaks of Shimla, Rashtrapati Niwas (formerly known as Viceregal Lodge) is a magnificent symbol of India’s colonial legacy. Located on Observatory Hill, this six-storied architectural masterpiece was once the summer residence of the British Viceroy, Lord Dufferin, and was completed in 1888.
Designed in the Jacobethan style with elements of Scottish Baronial architecture, the building is adorned with grey stone masonry, teak wood interiors, and expansive hallways. Today, it houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) but remains partially open to the public for guided tours.
