Discover Serenity at Dubdi Monastery – Sikkim’s Oldest Buddhist Retreat

Tucked away in the quiet hills of West Sikkim, Dubdi Monastery stands as a timeless symbol of spiritual retreat and peace. The word ‘Dubdi’, meaning the retreat, aptly captures the monastery’s essence — a sanctuary away from the noise of the world, surrounded by the healing embrace of nature.

Established in 1701 by Chogyal Namgyal, Dubdi Monastery is considered the oldest monastery in Sikkim and belongs to the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Located near Yuksom, the first capital of Sikkim, it holds immense religious and historical significance.

The monastery is perched at an altitude of 2,100 metres and is reached by a short trek through thick chestnut forests, which adds to its mystical appeal. The two-storey structure is crowned with an intricately designed, bell-shaped gilded dome and features traditional Sikkimese architecture.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Images of saints and divinities of the Nyingma order

  • Ancient Buddhist manuscripts preserved for centuries

  • A tranquil atmosphere perfect for meditation and reflection

From the monastery, you can enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, often wrapped in clouds, which enhances the sense of peace and connection with nature.
